The term "desk calendar" originally referred to a calendar placed on a desk. Today, there are both desktop and electronic desk calendars. Major varieties include business calendars, paper-frame calendars, crystal calendars, calendars for events, notepads, gift calendars, and personalized calendars.
Calendars first appeared in China over 4,000 years ago. A page of oracle bone inscriptions proves that the calendar was already quite advanced during the Shang Dynasty. This page is the oldest physical calendar in human history, and is therefore also called a calendar. A Tang Dynasty poem goes, "There is no calendar in the mountains; when the cold ends, one cannot tell the year." "Calendar" may be the earliest desk calendar. During the Tang Dynasty, historians cut paper by the day and bound it into volumes, one for each month. Each page had the month and day written on it, with blanks left for eunuchs to record the emperor's words and deeds. This was the "calendar." At the end of each month, the "calendar" was first submitted to the emperor for review and then archived by the historian for use in compiling the "National History." Because of its function of recording time and discussing events, civil and military officials emulated it.
